AT&T Sends Out an $80 Smartphone, the Nokia Surge, on July 19
July 13, 2009 by CoreyO
Forget all this $700 smart-phone bologna. AT&T has announced the release date and price of the Nokia Surge: July 19th for only $79.99 with a two-year contract and a $50 rebate. Don’t be surprised when I say there is a catch, but you can still go and break something. Their rebate is dependent upon having a call plan for more than $39 as well as a data plan for $30 or more. The data plan stipulation doesn’t seem so upsetting since a smart phone is just a talking document reader without a data plan anyway.
Nokia designed this phone for the social network enthusiast in mind. It is a Symbian phone and has a full QWERTY keyboard that slides out and comes pre installed with JuiceCaster that connects to social networking sites like Facebook. It has a full HTML browser with Flash support, complete email solutions, AT&T Navigator, AT&T Mobile Music, and a 2.0 mega-pixel camera – we would’ve like to have seen 3.2 mega-pixels. What makes up for the week camera is something called AT&T Video Share that allows users to share live video while talking on the phone.
Of course, if you have an extra $100, AT&T is offereing the iPhone 16GB for $199. I am a QWERTY keyboard fan myself and prefer the Palm Pre.

Ooooh, a smartphone that has a Facebook application…maybe I’ll consider this one, if only I wouldn’t have to switch to AT&T…
